What are some simple things I can do or ways I can prevent accidentally downloading cookies or virus

We have a Gateway with Windows 98 and it's pretty old, so it's hard to find programs that are compatible with it that would block viruses. My mom says that even voting on polls that are on certain websites may save cookies to your computer. How do you prevent that?

Cookies aren't inherently bad. They help you stay logged in when you visit Web sites, for example. But you can clear all of the cookies when you close your browser if you'd like. Just use Firefox and set it to do that.

Firefox users can also add the "TrackMeNot" addon. This basically sends the wrong information for tracking cookies. It won't make you anonymous or anything like that, but it will throw off sites like Amazon, that send you targeted pages based on what you've visited on that site before (as in: you look at a Stephen King book, so Amazon presents you a list of other Stephen King books that you might like, or perhaps Dean Koontz novels).

As for viruses: I'd definitely install a good antivirus. I like AVG Free Edition because it's legally free and does a very good job of protecting my system. You can visit download.com to download this. Or, if it won't work with Win98, you can use the site's filtered search options to find an antivirus that does work with your system.
