The biggest reason right now is financial, what the criminals do is send out spam or IM's that will download a virus that will allow them to control your computer. They for the most part they are not interested in you, but what you and hundreds of thousands of "zombie PC's" can do. A common tactic is to bombard an off shore gambling site with so much traffic that they can no longer do business. Then they extort money from them to turn off the attack, which they usually get, because there really isn't any legal recourse for the gambling sites to follow, because gambling sites are not legal in the U.S. They also can bring down other sites like CNN, and Bluefrog. There are researchers that create proof of concept viruses to allow anti-virus companies to stay ahead of the criminals. There are many more reasons, but getting large farms of Zombie PC's is most common, they also rent these farms out to people who do what ever they want to do with them.
