PLEASE HELP.. computer nerds who know about viruses!!?

My sister has had her computer simply shutdown lately.... she did a computer check with one of the places that say they will find viruses..etc. They found over 900 instances of spyware or trojans. And then you have to pay for them blocking them (or whatever).... bear in mind that I am NOT AT ALL computer savvy. She never did anything about it since recently she tried to get on the computer and it says that the taskbar has been disabled.

Can you tell me: does this mean get a new computer? OR what is our next step? I will help her pay for getting things right but what do we do now? (step by step for the computer challenged)

Thank you!

Computer nerds? WTF !?!

If the computer has shut down and you can't use it then I think the only solution is to take it in to a repair shop and have them re-format the hard drive, or sort out the problem.

If you can use it then get specialist help (free) at a malware-removal forum such as Bleeping Computer: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/
Normally I would say to download some antivirus and antispyware apps. But seeing she can't get it to run the OS you have only a couple options left. As far as formatting and reinstalling the OS, well, in your case I would reconsider. Your best bet is to remove the hard drive and install it in another computer as a slave drive. The computer you will install it in needs to have a good antivirus and antispyware applications installed. When you get the drive setup run the applications to clean the infections. Reeinstall the drive back into her computer and see if it solves your problem. If it does, do yourself a big favor and don't connect to the internet until you get a good set of security program on it. Kaspersky is my recommendation but there are others that will work also. Hope this helps, good luck.
step one do not alienate the people who you are asking for help by using derogatory terms like nerd. second my recommendation for a computer that is that far gone is to reformat, you could salvage it if you have important information on the computer you don't want to loose but at this point reformatting is the best way to be completely sure the computer is clean.
