Because of the underlying Unix permission structure of OS X on macs, it is much, much harder for a virus to get on your machine, do damage, and/or spread. It is possible for there to be a mac virus, but there have only ever been a couple of proof-of-concept ones.

Because of the way OS X works under the hood, I wouldn't worry about viruses unless you are actually installing something you downloaded. If your torrenting, say, music, you are more likely to get struck by lightening than to get a virus from it.

Viruses are very rare with Mac's but any software, websites, ftps, etc.. have the power of running a script on your machine that can do damage..
Macs are very capable of getting viruses just that there are not many viruses made for the Mac so i would still run a virues scan after you download a torrent
Macs don't get many viruses, and what viruses there are cannot be spread, and don't do critical damage, and are easily removed. I doubt any BitTorrent user would have access to one of these trojans, as (I beleive) they were made by Anti-Virus companies to prove that Mac users need to buy their software, but the viruses weren't, or at least shouldn't have been released.
